£5,000 raised for toddler left fighting for life after Barnsley crash killed grandad

Leon Yould died at the scene of the crash, but grandson Michael Keen survived.

More than £5,000 has been raised for a toddler left fighting for life after a crash which killed his grandfather.

Leon Yould, 56, and his one-year-old grandson, Michael Keen, were walking on West Street in Barnsley when they were struck by a Volkswagen Polo which crashed into a wall on 22 December.

Mr Yould died at the scene. Michael was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.

The incident happened on West Street in Worsbrough.

Two fundraising pages have been set up to support Michael's recovery.

Writing on one of the pages, his grandmother, Elizabeth Keen, said he remained in an induced coma.

She said: "He has had multiple operations and we have been made aware that he could have brain damage and be paralysed but we remain hopeful as we won't know anything definite until he is awake."

A second fundraising page was also launched to support the family ahead of a 10km sponsored run in York.

Mwanwhile, Barnsley football fans took part in a minute's silence during Barnsley's match against Wrexham on New Year's Day in memory of Mr Yould, who was a lifelong supporter.

The driver of the Volkswagen is helping South Yorkshire Police with their enquiries.
