Suspected drink driver found asleep at the wheel after crashing into Rotherham house

'Steady on': The bodycam footage shows the driver having to be helped from his car to the police car

Police have released footage of a suspected drink driver who was found asleep at the wheel of his car after crashing into a house.

Officers on patrol found the 40-year-old man slumped in the seat of his car at the site of the collision on Pit Street in Kimberworth, Rotherham, on Monday morning, 30 December.

Bodycam footage released by South Yorkshire Police shows two officers speaking to the man through the open door.

One of them can be heard saying: "He stinks of drink. There's loads of alcohol in the front passenger seat."

The man can then be seen struggling to get out of the car without the officers' help. He is supported to the nearby police car in handcuffs.

The man was unable to provide a breath sample at the roadside or in custody and was taken to hospital for treatment.

He later failed to consent to having his sample analysed and has been reported on summons.

Temporary Roads Policing Inspector Brandon Brown said: "We are releasing this footage on New Year's Eve to shows road users just how dangerous drink driving can be.

"Many people will be sensible tonight, and choose to use public transport or a taxi as their method of transportation when they celebrate the new year starting. But we are urging you to think twice before you get behind the wheel tomorrow - you very well may still be over the limit."

It follows 47 deaths on the roads of South Yorkshire in 2024. One in six fatal collisions involves drink drivers.

Temporary inspector Brown added: "Everyone has a responsibility when it comes to making sure they are fit to get behind the wheel.

"We are dedicated to creating safer roads, and will be out tonight and tomorrow, ensuring that we catch those who pose an increased risk to other road users."
