Footage shows woman unable to walk and blowing nearly six times drink drive limit on M1
Video from South Yorkshire Police
Footage released by South Yorkshire Police shows a driver who was so drunk she was unable to walk to a police car after stopping in a live lane of the M1.
South Yorkshire Police said they were called to the motorway at around 2pm on Thursday, 19 December, following reports of a crash on the motorway.
They found a car driven by 39-year-old Sarah Liggett, of Shakespeare Road, Oldham, which had stopped in a live lane of the motorway.
Officers suspected she was over the legal drink drive limit and attempted to remove her from the car and get her to safety.
Bodycam footage shows Liggett saying "alright, give me a sec" as officers try to help her.
An officer replies: "Come on, we are in the middle of a motorway".
Liggett can then be seen stumbling and falling to the floor.
After getting into the back of a police car, she gave a breathalyser reading almost six times the legal limit.
Liggett refused to take another test at a police station.
At court on Friday she pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis at Sheffield Magistrates Court.
She is due to be sentenced on 17 February at Barnsley Magistrates' Court.
Temporary Roads Policing Inspector Brandon Brown said: “One in six fatal collisions involves a drink driver. The decision to get behind the wheel after a drink can be devastating.
“As experienced roads policing officers, we have sadly had to be that person that delivers the devastating news someone’s loved one has died, approaching a house with Christmas lights and cheer brings a greater darkness upon you.
“We are proactively patrolling the roads and carrying out operations to catch those who increase the risk to other road users and reduce casualties on our roads.“
