The driver of a lorry that was seen swerving across a road in North Yorkshire was found to be three times the drink drive limit.

Officers from North Yorkshire Police stopped the vehicle after it was seen driving erratically on the A169 near Malton just before 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old driver failed to provide a roadside breath test and was arrested.

He blew a sample three times the legal limit once in custody.

Sgt James Jarman, of Ryedale Police, said: “Drink driving risks the lives of all road users – but to be driving an HGV whilst three times over the limit is incomprehensible.

"I would like to thank the member of public for calling the police. Our officers’ quick attendance meant the vehicle could be stopped before someone was injured or even killed.”

The arrest is one of more than 70 relating to suspected drink driving since 1 December.
