West Yorkshire towns Hebden Bridge and Todmorden 'cut off from each other' due to sewer collapse

Residents in West Yorkshire towns have been told to prepare for travel disruption due to emergency repairs to a key route through the Calder Valley.

The A646 Halifax Road at Charlestown, on the western side of Hebden Bridge town centre, is closed in both directions after damage to sewer workings were detected.

Calderdale Council say that the road will remain closed throughout next week (16 Dec - 22 Dec) for emergency repairs to take place.

They said: "This is a very busy road and significant disruption is inevitable."

Yorkshire Water has apologised for the disruption.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, the repair on Halifax Road is quite complex. There is a collapsed culvert, which usually falls under council responsibility, as well as a damaged sewer.

"To make sure the work can be complete as soon as possible, Yorkshire Water is carrying out a repair to both assets.

"The issue is deep underground, so to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers, we need to shut the road for at least a week."

"The highways authority requires diversion routes to follow the same type of road that is currently closed; therefore, the diversion is longer than usual and may cause some disruption."
