Fans gather at Elland Road to celebrate Leeds United's promotion despite advice to stay away
Hundreds of Leeds United fans have gathered outside Elland Road to celebrate the club's promotion to the Premier League, despite being told to stay at home.
The club confirmed a return to the top flight without kicking a ball, as West Brom's defeat to Huddersfield sealed promotion.
After the final whistle a large crowd took to Elland Road to celebrate. At one stage, players who were at the stadium shared their joy with fans by looking out of the window.
The club's director of football Victor Orta was also spotted with a Leeds United flag.
The crowd gathered despite advice from the club and the police for fans to stay at home and respect the COVID-19 restrictions.
On Thursday, Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post that the fight against COVID-19 is not over yet, and that "we must continue to be sensible".
His sentiments were echoed by West Yorkshire Police who said that "Covid-19 is still with us and large gatherings are still not permitted."
