West Yorkshire's chief constable says questions about the fatal shooting of Yassar Yaqub by a police officer can't be answered until the investigation is complete.

Mr Yaqub died after being shot as he sat in a car on the junction 24 slip road, near Huddersfield, during a "pre-planned" firearms operation on Monday night.

Hundreds of people attended the 28-year-old's funeral today, but his family are continuing to demand more information about the circumstances which led to his death.

However, chief constable Dee Collins, who met community representatives today, said the full facts would only be established by a full investigation.

She said: "I understand the desire from Mr Yaqub’s family and friends, from within our communities and the media for answers to their unresolved questions.

"But we must let the independent investigation run its course, properly and thoroughly. I assure you that West Yorkshire Police is cooperating fully with that ongoing Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation and will continue to do so."

Mr Yaqub died from gun shot wounds to the chest. An inquest, which opened today, heard a gun was found in the passenger footwell of the car he was in at the time.

Moshin Amin, from Dewsbury, who was arrested during the operation, appeared in court today charged with firearms offences.

Ms Collins expressed sympathy for Mr Yaqub's family and said a demonstration in Bradford during which a police car was attacked "highlighted the concerns of some people".

But she added: "I am committed to working together with them to prevent a minority of individuals from behaving inappropriately and committing potential criminal offences."
