Match to be played in memory of footballer who won Victoria Cross

A match is to be played tomorrow in memory of the only professional footballer player to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

100 years to the day after Yorkshireman Donald Bell was killed in action - the two teams he played for, Bradford Park Avenue and Newcastle United, will meet in a friendly at the Horsfall Stadium in Bradford.

2nd Lieutenant Bell from Harrogate was awarded the VC, the army's highest award for gallantry, for storming a German machine gun post single handed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

10 days later he was killed attempting a similar feat.
