School bus in Kendal HGV crash

Ten people were taken to hospital this morning after a crash between a bus carrying schoolchildren and a heavy goods vehicle.

It happened on the A685 between Tebay and Kendal and left the road blocked for most of the day.

The lorry driver from Kendal was seriously injured and the bus driver, also from Kendal, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Officials from the Environment Agency are at the scene of the A685 collision which occurred this morning and involved a lorry and a school bus.

A large amount of diesel fuel has spilt out onto the road from the lorry.

Motorists are currently being advised to use the following diversions as the road is still closed:

• M6 junction 38 Tebay southwards to junction 37, then A684 into Kendal and vice versa

For non-motorway traffic:

• B6260 from Tebay to Orton, then the B6261 from Orton to Shap Toll Bar, and from there along the A6 to Kendal, and vice versa

The Environment Agency is at the scene of the school bus and lorry crash on the A685 because a large amount of diesel has spilt from the lorry.

Cumbria County Council are have called out a specialist clean-up contractor to deal with the spillage, who are on site now.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to use the following diversions:

M6 junction 38 Tebay southwards to junction 37, then A684 into Kendal, and vice-versa.

For non-motorway traffic, a suitable route is to use the B6260 from Tebay to Orton, then the B6261 from Orton to Shap Toll Bar, and from there along the A6 to Kendal, and vice-versa.

Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has praised the swift response from the emergency services dealing with the school bus and lorry crash in Kendal.

Investigations are underway into the cause of the crash between a school bus and a lorry, which happened near Kendal this morning.

The driver of the lorry that was involved in a crash with a bus carrying school children near Kendal, has been taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The front cab of the lorry was crushed in the crash.

A bus driver has been arrested after a crash with a school bus near Kendal in south Cumbria.

The lorry driver had to be cut out of his cabin and has been taken to hospital with spinal injuries.

A woman traveling on the the bus has neck injuries and many of the children have minor injuries such as cuts and bruises as the bus did not have seat belts for passengers.

The A685 between Tebay and Kendal is still blocked - drivers are asked to find another route.

All of those injured in a crash near Kendal, believed to have been 20 people, have now left the scene of the crash at Grayrigg.

The collision involved a heavy goods lorry and a school bus, which was carrying passengers at the time, including school children aged between 13 and 16.

Police have confirmed that no children were seriously injured in the crash.

Three adult passengers have been taken to Lancaster Hospital for treatment for injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

The road will remain closed for the foreseeable future while collision and diversions are in place.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area at this time.

The driver of a lorry, which was involved in a collision with a bus carrying schoolchildren near Kendal, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 44-year-old man was removed from the cabin by emergency services and taken to Preston Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
