28 jobs lost as Moffat hotel closes six days before Christmas

A hotel in Moffat has closed with the loss of 28 jobs.

The Moffat House Hotel was shut due to the insolvency of the hotel's owner. Staff say they were given no notice of the closure which came just six days before Christmas.

Financial group, FRP Advisory, has been appointed as trustee of the estate and will oversee the sale of the hotel and any other assets.

The closure of Moffat House hotel has also ruined plans for the 53 guests who booked to have their Christmas lunch there.

The general manager Ailsa Barr, who is among those out of a job, said suppliers had been turning up demanding payment for bills which were months late.

She told ITV Border about the reaction of staff to the news: "There was people crying there was people in shock, people just wanted out of the building because they couldn't believe it. I had to phone other mangers to let them know so they came in to get their stuff. We were all just in shock just didn't know what to say or do. We were angry at the fact that the owner hadn't even given us the heads up even to say look, this is the financial situation at the moment."

Moffat House Hotel has 21 rooms and a 2-bed cottage. The hotel has a banqueting suite with capacity for 100 guests and is a popular venue for weddings and events.

The property and assets will be marketed for sale in early 2020.

Interested parties are being asked to contact FRP Advisory on 0330 055 5455.
