Giant crane begins demolition of Central Plaza Hotel
A giant crane has started demolition work on a derelict hotel in Carlisle city centre.
Eight thousand tonnes of rubble is set to be removed from the site of the old Central Plaza which will mean 450 trips by HGVs to remove the rubble. This will then be taken to a recycling centre.
Demolition workers will try to to salvage the ornate carvings on the side of the building.
The council says this stage will take several weeks and is weather dependent.
Meanwhile, Victoria Viaduct remains closed to pedestrians and vehicles.
Businesses affected should contact the council on 01228 817444 or email EDAdmin@carlisle.gov.uk.
