Kendal's Victoria Bridge reopens after vital repair work

A vital road in Kendal that has been closed for two weeks has now reopened.

Victoria Bridge, on the A6 at Sandes Avenue, opened to the public at 5pm on Sunday evening after undergoing major repair work.

Contractors and a dive team worked to stabilise the foundations of the structure which had been seriously damaged by flooding.

The 150-year-old crossing - known to residents as the 'Batman Bridge' because of it's unique markings - closed to vehicles and pedestrians on 23 July.

Although the closure was necessary to carry out emergency repairs, it resulted in major traffic delays in the town centre during peak tourism season.

Talks of a new bypass outside Kendal have been growing but no timescale has been established.
