A woman has died following a major road collision in Cumbria.

It happened on the M6 near Tebay at 1.55pm, involving seven cars and a lorry.

The 69-year-old woman, from Southampton, who has not been identified, was a passenger in one of the cars.

Paramedics treated her at the scene but she did not survive.

The man who was driving the car, aged 73, also from Southampton, was flown to the Royal Preston Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Officers were called at the same time to reports of a collision between a lorry and two cars on the southbound carriageway, in the same place.

No injuries have been reported for this collision.

Two air ambulances were sent to the scene, with tailbacks stretching back in both directions for over three miles.

The northbound carriageway remained closed for several hours while investigations were underway. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways are now open.

Police are asking for witnesses or anyone who was travelling in the area at the time with dashcam footage to contact 101.
