Thousands expected at Kendal Mountain Festival

Thousands of outdoor enthusiasts are expected to descend on Kendal tonight, for the annual Kendal Mountain Festival.

The event is described as the "main social event for outdoor enthusiasts in the UK."

The programme includes an International Film Competition, in which more than 100 films are screened.

There will also be exhibitions, workshops and active sports events, and at this year's event members of Kendal Mountain Rescue Team will begin a 290km trek to raise money.

The festival's opening ceremony gets underway at 5:30pm this evening, and will be hosted by mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington.
