Businesses in Keswick have gathered almost 4,000 signatures on a petition asking Allerdale Borough Council not to raise car parking charges.

The council has proposed lowering charges in places like Maryport and raising them by up to 40% in Keswick, to make £3.5million worth of savings and encourage people to use long stay car parks, freeing up spaces closer to town.

But businesses in the town are angry with the plans, and several have joined forces on a petition calling on the council to rethink.

The car park next to Theatre by the Lake is free after 7pm, but the council proposes to extend charges until 9pm, with an overnight fee thereafter.

The theatre says it'll add at least £5 to an evening's entertainment.

Allerdale Borough Council says it hasn't made a decision yet.

It's reviewing a consultation with local residents and visitors.

That will then go to the full council on 22 February, where a final decision will be made.
