The community of St Abbs have launched a funding appeal to pay for an independent lifeboat station in the town.

It follows the departure of the RNLI, which had previously run the lifeboat station there.

The community would take ownership of that station, and pay for a the running of a lifeboat there.

It will operate under the Community Trust - local solicitors are setting the charity up for free.

The St Abbs Community Trust says it needs around £250,000 for the boat, crew and medical equipment, and another £250,000 needs to be raised initially towards liquid funds.

After serving the Eastern Scottish coast for over 104 years, the former RNLI station was closed on 3 September 2015, following a decision that a station two miles away in Eyemouth could effectively cover the area with their addition of a new inshore lifeboat.
