Murder investigation launched following death of a man in Harlow

Five teenagers detained after a Polish man was killed in Harlow in August have been released without charge.

Arek Jozwik, 40, was attacked outside a takeaway on The Stow at around 11:30pm on Saturday, August 27. He was struck once and suffered severe head injuries as he fell and died later in hospital.

Six teenagers, five aged 15 and one aged 16 and all from Harlow, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Five have now been released from bail without charge due to insufficient evidence. One teenager who is aged 15 and from Harlow remains on police bail.

Det Insp Danny Stoten said: "We have carried out a huge amount of work into the investigation.

"So far we have taken over 150 witness statements, spoken to over 300 people during house to house and general enquiries and seized over 100 hours of CCTV.

"In excess of 30 police officers and staff have been involved in the investigation and have committed over 1200 additional hours.”

Poland has sent it's Foreign Minister and Home Affairs Minister to London today to discuss the safety of Poles in the UK after recent attacks in Harlow.

Witold Waszczykowski and Mariusz Błaszczak will meet with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

Leaders of the Polish community will also be present.

The Polish government says it is concerned about the situation of the Polish community following the murder of Arek Jozwik in the Essex town last week and another assault on two men yesterday outside the William Aylmer pub.

Both are being investigated by local police as potential hate crimes.

A Polish man who died in Harlow after being assaulted died from a head injury an inquest has heard.

39 year old Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, died outside shops in The Stow on August 27.

Six teenagers have been arrested and released on police bail as part of a murder inquiry.

Greater Essex Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray opened and adjourned the inquest into Mr Jozwik's death saying she wanted to review police reports on the case.

All faiths march in memory of murdered man

People from all faiths will be taking part in a march through Harlow in Essex following the murder of a Polish man which police say could be a hate crime.

Organisers of tomorrow's march say it's important the community displays solidarity and peace.

A community turned out in force at a candlelit vigil for a Polish man killed in Harlow, Essex in a possible hate crime.

Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, was attacked on Saturday night and died on Monday from head injuries.

The 40-year-old and another Polish man were set upon outside a row of takeaway shops in what Essex Police believe was an unprovoked attack at around 11.35pm.

Campaign group Stand Up To Racism organised a candlelit vigil at the scene of the attack to show solidarity with the Polish community in the town.

More than 200 people attended the event on Wednesday evening, including faith leaders, campaigners and people from the Polish community.

They listened to speakers from across the community who told of the importance of standing together.

A further community event is planned on Saturday in tribute to Mr Jozwik.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Pasmore, of Essex Police, said while six teenagers "who were perhaps involved in that melee" had been arrested, officers believed there may have been 12 to 13 people there.

He stressed there was no evidence to suggest the incident was a hate crime, but it could not be ruled out.

Five 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on police bail until October 7.<

A 43-year-old man, also from Harlow, was injured in the attack, and discharged

Poland's deputy prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki has expressed his sorrow at the death of Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, after he was attached in Harlow, Essex at the weekend.

Mr Morawiecki who is on a visit to England, told Radio Four's Today programme:

"This was a very sad day, and sad event. I know one line of the investigation by the police was that it might have been a hate crime, it remains to be seen what were the reasons. I hope it will never happen again, but yes, this will pose a question mark in many families, Polish families, in Great Britain."
