The food hall at Peterborough City Market has been closed after two positive cases of coronavirus were detected.

According to Public Health England, the Peterborough area has seen a total of 65 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the fortnight since 22nd June.

That is 13% of all the cases recorded in their period in the whole of the East of England.

Since the start of the pandemic, the city has seen among the highest infection rates in the region with 629 confirmed cases per 100,000 of the population.

Peterborough City Council said that businesses and traders have been given information about the required safety measures that need to be taken now.

The coronavirus infection rate in Cambridgeshire including Peterborough has seen 401 confirmed cases for every 100,000 in the population. The comparable figure for the East of England is 377.

The Office of National Statistics says that 487 people have died in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough since the start of the pandemic until 19th June. That is 57 people per 100,000 in the population.
