The NHS reported on Wednesday that 24 patients had died in hospitals in the Anglia region, which was the highest figure in a single day since the beginning of June.

Bedford Hospital reported 11 of its patients had died. The deaths occurred between 15th June and 29th June but have only just been included in the daily figures.

Bedford has the highest coronavirus infection rate in the Anglia region with the area seeing many more cases per head of the population than other areas.

Northamptonshire is another area where the slow rate of decline in cases has been causing concern among health officials.

Northampton General Hospital reported four more patients had died taking the total number of deaths there to 297. The hospital recorded 53 deaths during June, which was the highest number of any hospital in the Anglia region. There were 35 deaths at Bedford hospital.

The total number of patients dying in the hospitals in the Anglia region has now reached 4,043 and the total number of deaths in all settings, including care home, hospitals and in the community is 5,816.
