Covid-19 is declining across the East of England but its impact on some areas is much more severe than others with confirmed cases and deaths failing to fall as fast as elsewhere.

Official figures released on Tuesday by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) revealed the number of people dying in the Anglia region with coronavirus has fallen for the ninth consecutive week.

In the week ending 19th June, 77 people died in the Anglia region compared to 116 the week before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the ONS reported that 5,730 people had died with the illness in the region up to 19th June. Reports from the Care Quality Commission and the NHS reveals a further 63 deaths since then taking the overall total to 5,793.

However some areas have been more badly affected that others and some hospitals are reporting patients dying while others have reports very few deaths in the past few weeks.

When the size of the population in the region is taken in to account, 79 people died with Covid-19 for every 100,000 people in the area but that ranges from county to county.

The highest death rate in the region is in Bedfordshire where 93 people have died per 100,000 of the population.

The lowest rate is in the Norfolk where the figure is 53 per 100,000.

Since the start of June, Northampton General Hospital has reported 49 patients have died with coronavirus and in the same county, Kettering General has seen 27 patients passing away.

The south of Essex is also affected disproportionately with the Basildon & Thurrock NHS Trust reporting 26 of their patients have died in June while Southend Hospital has had 22 patient deaths.

In contrast, the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow has seen no patient deaths in June while since the start of the pandemic more than 200 patients have died there.

The major hospital in the Anglia region reporting no coronavirus deaths in June is Milton Keynes Hospital. The first death in Milton Keynes was on 6th March and no Covid-19 patients have died there since 26th May.
