Leon Barnett: Defender vows to 'remain positive' after being forced to retire with heart problem

Northampton Town defender Leon Barnett has vowed to "remain positive" after he was forced to retire at the age of 32 because of a heart condition.

The former Norwich City man was advised by doctors that it would be "unsafe" to continue playing after his heart rate reached almost 300 beats per minute during a game against Bury in early October.

He first noticed that was something was amiss during an EFL Cup game at Wycombe Wanderers back in August, and he then experienced similar symptoms a couple of months later.

Barnett made more than 350 professional appearances, including a stint in the Premier League with Norwich, and has now been offered a coaching role with the Cobblers.

"I'm always a positive person, I've always surrounded myself with positive people," Barnett told ITV News Anglia.

"I think if I start dwelling on retirement, and the 'what ifs', then I could end up in a bad place."
