Leon Barnett: Heart condition forces Northampton Town defender to retire
Northampton Town defender Leon Barnett has been forced to retire at the age of 32 after he was diagnosed with a heart condition.
The centre-back hasn't played for the Cobblers since a draw with Bury in early October.
During that game, Barnett's heart rate reached almost 300 beats per minute, and doctors have now advised him that it would be "unsafe" for him to continue training and playing.
Barnett played for both Luton Town and Norwich City earlier in his career and made more than 350 professional appearances.
"Leon had been having some issues but after a reaction in the Bury game we knew something wasn't right, so we sent him for further testing," manager Keith Curle said.
"The medical team made the correct decision to stop all activity, and after testing and second and third opinions, for his own health and safety, Leon has been advised to retire.
"It is very sad news. Leon is not just a good player, but an important figure off the pitch too.
"However, far more importantly for Leon and his family, is that this has been diagnosed now and he is fit and well."
Northampton have confirmed that they have offered Barnett a coaching role for the rest of the season where he will work with both the first team and the academy.
Other clubs have been paying their respects, including Luton where Barnett started his career.
