Emotional Peter Wright beats Gerwyn Price to win first major darts title
Video report by ITV News Anglia's Andy Ward
An emotional Peter Wright has ended his long wait for a first televised darts title after beating Welshman Gerwyn Price in the final of the UK Open in Somerset.
The 46-year-old from Mendham in Suffolk had lost all of the PDC finals he'd played in up until last night - including defeats to world number one Michael van Gerwen in the same tournament in 2015 and 2016.
However, he made it a case of third time lucky against Price - winning 11-6 to lift the trophy and claim the £70,000 prize money.
"The fans have given me fantastic support, not just this year but also for the last two years," Wright said.
"I don't want to put a downer on it, we had no Michael (van Gerwen) here and no Phil Taylor, but I still had the pressure of being favourite when you had Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis and all the other fantastic players in the tournament.
"It was a lot of pressure and I was happy just to get to the final, three years on the trot in one of the hardest tournaments. To win it is brilliant."
World number three Wright is arguably in the form of his life, and recently recorded the second-highest televised average (119.50) in history against Adrian Lewis in the Premier League last week.
van Gerwen didn't compete in this year's UK Open due to a back injury, but Wright still beat the likes of Raymond van Barneveld and Daryl Gurney on his way to the final.
He will be back in Premier League action on Thursday when he takes on James Wade at the SSE Hydro arena in Glasgow.
