Former solider becomes first double amputee to climb Mount Manaslu in Nepal

A former paratrooper has become the first double amputee to climb the eighth-highest mountain in the world - Mount Manaslu in Nepal.

Rustam Nabiev, 29, successfully scaled the 8163-metre mountain at the start of October.

The expedition took 34 days to complete for the Russian paraclimber from Ufa, who lost both legs when his barracks collapsed in 2015.

"I thought a great deal about what I've accomplished, and I realised that I did something unbelievable. Deep inside I can't even believe it," Nabiev told Russian broadcaster Russia 24.

"With this act I wanted to show that anything in this life can be accomplished only through action."

Nabiev is no stranger to climbing, having previously reached the summit of Russia's Mount Elbrus.

"I thought a great deal about what I've accomplished, and I realised that I did something unbelievable. Deep inside I can't even believe it," Nabiev said.

"It was like a mission that I had to finish for all those people that were watching me."
