Mark Cavendish takes Olympic silver medal in omnium
Mark Cavendish has finally won an Olympic medal - but had to settle for silver in the men's omnium at Rio.
After eight years of trying and at the third time of asking, Cavendish finished behind Italy's Elia Viviani, while defending champion Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark took bronze.
Cavendish was in second place heading into the final event, the 160-lap points race, but he could not overhaul Viviani.
The race was not without drama and a mid-race crash appeared to be of Cavendish's own making, something which may yet lead to a protest from rivals or a sanction from race officials.
Viviani finished with 207 points, Cavendish with 194 and Hansen with 192. World champion Fernando Gaviria of Colombia was fourth on 181 points.
Cavendish was the only member of the Team GB track cycling team to not stand on the podium at least once in Beijing 2008, and fell away in the men's road race at London 2012 - finishing 29th place.
Earlier, Charlotte Dujardin won gold in the dressage for Team GB to retain her London 2012 title.
Riding Valegro, she recorded a score of 93.928% in the Individual Grand Prix Freestyle event on Monday to finish above Germany's six-time Olympic gold medallist Isabell Werth.
The 31-year-old has now claimed three Olympic gold medals, putting her alongside Laura Trott as the joint-most decorated female British Olympian in history.
Monday also saw Team GB's Sophie Hitchon win bronze in the women's hammer throw.
She recorded a distance of 74.54m at the Olympic Stadium.
