Sir Philip Green to be grilled over BHS collapse

Sir Philip Green will give evidence to MPs on Wednesday about the collapse of BHS.

Here's everything you need to know.

  • What's it all about?

Sir Philip Green's sale of the retailer and its subsequent demise.

The tycoon, who also owns Top Shop and Dorothy Perkins. sold BHS in 2015 for £1 to Dominic Chappell - a former racing car driver with no retail experience and who had been declared bankrupt twice.

The beleaguered retailer collapsed earlier this month after it went into administration and no buyer was found.

The Business and Work and Pensions select committees are now conducting a joint inquiry into its demise.

Definitely.

Green has been strongly criticised for his decision to sell to Chappell.

He will face questions about the £571m deficit in the BHS pension scheme, which covers 20,000 current and past employees.

Green is also likely to be grilled over Dominic Chappell's claim that he attempted to sabotage an attempt to sell the retailer to Sports Direct.

Exchanges between Green and Frank Field, Labour MP and chairman of the Work and Pensions Committee, will be of interest.

Last week, Green accused Field of bias and suggested he would not attend the hearing unless the Labour MP resigned.

But he confirmed on Tuesday that he would appear.

"This will be the first and only opportunity I have to tell my side of the very sad BHS story and I will do my best to answer all the questions put to me in an honest and open way."

  • What time does the hearing begin?
