Balls: Free movement key issue in Turkey-EU row

The former Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has said the free movement of people is the key issue in the row over Turkey potentially joining the EU in future.

His comments come after a bitter dispute between the Remain and Leave campaigns over whether Turkey is likely to become a member of the EU in the coming years - and the affect on Britain if it does.

Leave campaigners have claimed murderers, terrorists and kidnappers from countries like Turkey could flock to Britain if it remains in the European Union.

The Armed Forces Minister Penny Mordaunt said that Turkey joining the bloc would cost maternity services nearly £400m in 10 years, and claimed that Britain would be powerless to stop Turkey becoming a member.

Those claims have, however, been dismissed by David Cameron, who told ITV's Peston on Sunday that Turkey joining the EU is "not remotely on the cards".
