A couple were disgusted to find a maggot in a packet of luxury biscuits from Sainsbury's and have demanded the supermarket giant investigate how the slimy grub came to be crawling on their tasty snack.

Andrew Cao, 34, purchased the pack of the supermarket's own brand 'Taste The Difference' Italian almond biscuits for his wife Alice.

But as the pair tucked into the £2 snack they were horrified after Alice felt something sticky in the packet and discovered the maggot crawling on one of the biscuits.

Mr Cao complained to Sainsbury's and demanded a full investigation into how the creature came to be inside the packet.

But Sainsbury's offered him a £10 gift voucher and apologised for the incident.

Unsatisfied, Mr Cao is continuing to demand an investigation.

"I checked online and they are still selling these biscuits. They should be pulled from the shelves until they've discovered how this happened," he said.

"I've asked them to investigate but they just want to ignore me. They say if I want them tested I should do it myself.

"We'd had two biscuits and as Alice reached into the packet for a third one she could feel something sticky.

"When she pulled the biscuits out and saw the maggot moving around, it was a very nasty shock."

The couple said they had been shopping at Sainsbury's for years but would now take their custom elsewhere.

"The maggot was small - a customer could easily not see it and swallow it. It has put us off biscuits and Sainsbury's for life," Mr Cao said.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said the matter was being investigated and added: "Incidents like this are extremely rare and we are sorry our customer had this experience.

"We are investigating the matter further with our suppliers."
