Sharm el-Sheikh flights suspended: Your rights if you're at the resort or planning to fly there

Airlines and holiday companies have grounded flights to and from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh following a change in travel advice from the Foreign Office.

Most of the tour operators affected by the grounding of Sharm flights have waived re-booking fees and offered flights to alternative destinations.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said he expects measures to be in place for airlines to start bringing people home from Friday. But the process could take up to 10 days.

Consumers booked on package holidays leaving within the next 48 hours are entitled to a refund or an alternative trip - but they may have to pay for any difference in price.

Contact your tour operator as the different companies have different policies and responses - some, like Thomas Cook, have cancelled all flights to Sharm up and including Thursday 12 November.

The Foreign Office is advising against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm airport.

Anyone who ignores this advice will invalidate their travel insurance.

It isn't clear what compensation will be available.

Where a situation arises that is outside of a company's control its not normally possible to claim compensation.

But in the 'special circumstances' of the British government grounding UK flights, it is best to contact your tour operator.
