Former Manchester United and England full-back Phil Neville has joined the coaching staff of Valencia as assistant manager, the Spanish club have announced.

Neville, who worked under Sociedad manager David Moyes at Man United and Everton, has chosen to become part of Portuguese boss Nuno Espirito Santo's backroom team.

Santo guided Valencia to fourth spot in La Liga in his first year in charge last season, qualifying for the Champions League.

After Neville's appointment, he said: "Phil has extensive experience at the highest level but above all has very clear knowledge and values that fit into our team and our club."

In September 2014, Valencia owner Peter Lim agreed to buy a 50% stake in Salford City, which he co-owns with Neville and his former Man United team-mates Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
