The chief executive of Centrica has told ITV News British Gas customers could be better off if they switched energy providers.

ITV News business editor Joel Hills reports:

Iain Conn told ITV News "could be quite a few [customers] that could be better off," but that he believes many British Gas users value service over price.

"This is a bit like renewing your car insurance at the lowest rate - you've got to keep changing it over all the time, because every year you've got to shop around," Conn said.

"Some people really do like to do that and want to, and I think it's good that the market shows them what the best offer really is," he added.

Addressing people's concerns about fracking, Conn said he understood why that happened and blamed "a lack of information".

"I think it's behoven on the industry that we actually demonstrate that it can be done securely and safely", he said.

Asked whether Labour's price freeze restricted Centrica's ability to cut bills, Mr Conn said it had not.

"We don't set our prices according to politics - our prices are set according to competition," he added.
