Meet the 'world's poorest president' - who has been offered $1m for his battered Volskwagen Beetle
Jose Mujica is a world leader quite different from any other.
Many enjoy the trappings of luxury - private jets, dinners of reindeer meat and multiple, lavish homes - while Uruguay's President until recently claimed only to own one thing: a blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.
His austere lifestyle has earned him the title of "the poorest President in the world". Upon taking to the premiership, Mujica claimed that even the run-down farm he lives on is owned by someone else (his wife, also a senior politician).
He now says he earns around $11,000 a month (around £83,000 a year) - of which he reportedly donates 90% to social causes.
Last week, Mujica told Uruguay's Busqueda that he has been offered $1 million for the now iconic vehicle - an amount he says he would hand to a charity providing housing to the homeless.
Mujica, formerly a member left-wing guerilla group the Tupamaros, was jailed for 14 years and has been shot six times.
He won acclaim in his country for his refusal to change his lifestyle upon taking the Presidency, as well as for pushing through socially liberal policies such as the legalisation of cannabis.
