Ralph Tarrant is now Britain's oldest man, after celebrating his 110th birthday.

What does he put his longevity down to? He told Daybreak: "Good health, and keeping fit.

"Being active and eating the sort of meals that suited you - not the sort of slapdash fish and chips.

"What you want is good meals, not so many sandwiches."

He added: "I've never been one that's gone into public houses, sat and drink and drink and drink."

The great-great grandfather, who lives alone and cooks his own meals, was born on July 7, 1903.

He was married to wife Phyllis for 79 years - making them the UK's longest-married couple - until her death at the age of 102 in 2012.
