Dementia sufferer and his son inspire millions with their singing videos
When Simon McDermott’s father Ted was diagnosed with dementia his world fell apart. In an attempt to help his father enjoy life again and create some happy memories he decided to try a bit of “ Carpool Karaoke”. The videos went viral generating 60 million views.
Simon McDermott talked to Christine about how singing his favourite old tunes helped with his dad's dementia and turned him into a star.
Ted used to be a Butlins redcoat and would perform all the old classics, so Simon made a CD with some of his dad’s favourite songs and recorded them singing together in the car. The videos went viral generating 60 million views. They also led to Ted recording his own charity single at Abbey Road studios.
Simon has since won a Pride of Britain Award as well as raising £150,000 for charity. Now he’s written a memoir of his dad's life.
We surprised Simon with an emotional thank you message from his parents.
