Summer skincare tips and advice

Summer’s here, which means skin needs plenty of care and attention to keep it healthy, protected from the sun and hydrated during the hotter months.

Lorraine's make-up artist and beauty expert Helen Hand shares her top tips to summer-proof your skin...

  • Wear a protective sunscreen on exposed parts of the body all year round, particularly in the summer months when the sun’s UV rays are strongest and most damaging to the skin

  • Apply a high water-resistant SPF under your moisturiser or foundation, even on an overcast day

  • Wear sunglasses to protect the fine and sensitive area around the eyes and a hat to protect the hair and scalp

  • Be sure to take regular breaks from the sun, particularly during the hours of 11am until 3pm, when the sun’s rays are at their strongest

  • Heat, sun exposure and air conditioning can cause the skin to dehydrate, resulting in dry and flaky skin. Rehydrate skin by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Water helps to keep skin cells plump and healthy.

  • Exfoliate the body and face to remove the build-up of dry skin and allow moisturiser to absorb deep into the skin. Regular exfoliation will also help to even out your tan, giving you a healthier and longer-lasting glow.

  • Heat and increased sweating can lead to enlarged pores, so remember to cleanse and tone to freshen the skin. This will also help to minimise the build-up of dirt and prevent clogged pores.
