Sir Tom Jones reveals devastation after wife's death
It really knocked the stuffing out of me
Legendary singer and national treasure Sir Tom Jones has spoken to Lorraine about losing his beloved wife of 59 years to cancer, taking back his big red chair on The Voice UK and the importance of music in his life!
Opening up about the death of his wife Linda, who lost a short battle with lung cancer last year, the singer said music had helped him through his darkest hours.
He told Lorraine: ''It really knocked the stuffing out of me because we’d been together since we were kids you see. We were kids together. And she has always been there so it was a strange thing.”
He continued: “I didn’t know whether I would be able to carry on and I just didn’t know but, you know, my family, and my son and my daughter-in-law who are also my managers and Mark, my son, he said, ‘look if you don’t sing, you’ll die, you’ll just shrivel up and die, do you want to do that?’ I said, ‘no, not really’. So we tried it, we sort of broke-in easily. I got some musicians together and we tried some songs out because I didn’t know whether I could sing and then we did.”
Music saved my life
Talking about the importance of music in his life, Sir Tom said: “It saved my life. Music is more important even to me now than it was before'', adding that his late wife would have loved to have seen him return to The Voice.
''She would be very happy that I am back on it."
He's a real veteran of the music business, but the 76-year-old shows no signs of slowing down...
Addressing rumours of a possible retirement, Sir Tom told Lorraine: “I still have the voice there and I still have the desire to use it, you know you have to.”
