Oscars mix up as wrong film announced best picture

It was very awkward and it was a shame because at a moment where we should have been celebrating we were like, 'what's going on?'

Moonlight actress Naomie Harris on the La La Land/Moonlight mix-up

It was a night of chaos and confusion at the Oscars after the top gong of best picture was presented to the WRONG movie!

The spectacular blunder saw La La Land announced as the best picture victor instead of Moonlight in an unprecedented mix-up.

The producers of the musical were already concluding their speeches when it was revealed there had been a major blunder and Moonlight had in fact scored the top prize of the night.

Bonnie and Clyde stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had announced La La Land had taken the best picture prize and the cast and crew had flooded the stage before producer Jordan Horowitz realised the error: "There's a mistake,'' he said. ''Moonlight, you guys won best picture.

"This is no joke. I'm afraid they read the wrong thing. This is not a joke, Moonlight, you won best picture."

Holy, moly! OMG, that was awful and also kind of amazing. My heart went out to all involved, but that was good TV. I'm sorry, but that's going to be really good to watch.

Actress Minnie Driver on that disastrous moment at the Oscars when La La Land was mistakenly handed top gong for best picture

A visibly shocked Kimmel intervened, saying: "This is very unfortunate what happened," before joking: "Personally I blame Steve Harvey" in a not-so-veiled reference to Harvey announcing the wrong winner at Miss Universe in 2015.

Someone's going to get fired

Everyone is talking about THAT Oscars mix up, including Warcraft actor Dominic Cooper

As La La Land's crew cleared the stage, Beatty returned to the microphone and said: "I'll tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said 'Emma Stone La La Land' that's why I took such a long look at Faye and then you. I wasn't trying to be funny. This is Moonlight, best picture."

Moonlight's director Barry Jenkins said, after the film was correctly revealed as the winner: "Very clearly even in my dreams this can't be true. But to hell with it because this is true. It's true, it's not fake."

The company responsible for the collation and counting of votes are "investigating" the mix-up, which will go down in Oscars history as one of the prize-giving ceremony's biggest mistakes ever.
