Jacqui Joseph: Create your own cushions
Floral trends are a fashion favourite season after season, and in home interiors that trend is massive. One of the quickest ways to add a touch of freshness to your home is with cushions! Jacqui Joseph demonstrates two easy ways to make your own!
Envelope cushion
Cut your fabric to size. I'm making a 45x45cm cover (18’) and add 2cm around all sides for your seam allowance
For the reverse of your cushion you’ll need two pieces of fabric to create your envelope. Cut two pieces adding 10 cm to the fold over edge.
To neaten to envelope edge on both pieces, double fold the top edge, give it a good press, then give them a topstitch
Now, with your front cushion fabric facing right way up, lay your two envelope pieces right side facing down and pin in place. All you have to do now is stitch round all four sides, snip off excess fabric on all four corners, so you have a nice sharp point on your cushions and it’s done.
Zipped cushion
Cut two pieces fabric to your desired size. I’m making a 45x45cm cover (18’) remember to add a 2cm seam allowance around all sides.
Now we need to add the zip. If you have a directional design on your fabric decide the right end for your zip (you don’t want an upside down cushion!) Stitch approximately 5 cm in on each side (the zip will go in that opening)
Press the seam flat, then pinor tack the zip in place. Don’t be nervous about adding a zip!
Carefully sew the zip in place, keeping your machine's zipper foot close to the zip teeth. Just before you get to the slider, pull it down out of the way, so that you can continue in a straight line.
Open the now sewn in zipper down half way. Fold the fabric’s right sides to right side, pin and stitch the three open seams. Remember to pull the zip down so that you can turn the cushion through.
Enjoy!
