How to stay active when working from home

Are you guilty of sitting at your desk for hours every day? Are you moving less than you used to?

With millions of us still working from home, it’s easier to slip into a sedentary lifestyle.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Voltarol to share some simple ways you can get moving more every day.

Establish a morning routine

If you work from home, it can become a habit to ‘ease’ into your day, but starting your morning with exercise is a great way of boosting your energy levels.

Whether it’s a simple home yoga routine, walking the dog, a quick set of sit-ups and push-ups, or going for a jog around the block, find something that is right for you and stick to it.

Get a standing desk

There’s no denying that sitting for too long throughout the day can be bad for our health.

If you find yourself chained to your desk for more hours than you would like, then a standing desk may be a great option for you. Many are convertible so that you can sit and stand intermittently.

Take walking phone calls

Whether you're taking a work call or calling a friend for a catch up, take the opportunity when you can to pace around the house, go for a quick walk, or even just stay standing for a few minutes to get your blood flowing.

Work out while watching TV

It's easy to just collapse onto the sofa while you unwind from a day’s work, but you can avoid even more sitting time and use your TV time to squeeze in a stretch or workout.

Set a reminder to take breaks

If you find that hours and hours can pass while you’re at your desk, setting an alarm on your phone to take a break every 30 minutes can make the world of difference to your day.

Take the time to get up and walk to the bathroom, do some quick chores, grab water from the kitchen, or simply stand by your desk and stretch for two minutes.

Use waiting time wisely

Throughout your day, look for reasons to stand up and move. While you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, brushing your teeth, or waiting for the microwave to ping, why not do some gentle stretches, star jumps or squats – just to get your blood pumping.

 Plan get-togethers around being active

You don't have to meet up at a cafe or bar every time you hang out with friends.

Why not invite them to join you for a walk around the park? Not only is it a great way to find the joy of movement; it also saves you money and calories!

Park further away

Next time you head to the shops, intentionally park as far away as possible from your destination to allow a little extra time for walking.
