Sharon Walters & Mark Lane
ITV Creates continues in 2021 with a new focus this year on collaboration. Every month there will be new ITV idents created by a new range of British artists - however, this time the artists will be asked who they would like to collaborate with, this could be anyone from a dancer to a scientist. The aim of the collaboration is that two completely different worlds collide and come together to create their own interpretation of the ITV logo. In a year of isolation, let’s celebrate working together.
Our artist for January is Sharon Walters, a London-based artist who creates hand-assembled collages celebrating black women. Sharon has collaborated with Mark Lane, an award-winning landscape gardener who was awarded ‘Landscape Designer of the Year 2020’.
Both creatives are from communities often described as marginalised, their aim, through this collaboration, was to seamlessly highlight the ability in disability and the power in blackness and the diversity of both. Together they created a unique installation, re-inventing the ITV logo.
To create the final piece, a unique, hand assembled paper collage was made, then enlarged to a large size on a sustainable and recycled material. The piece was then layered and installed within a landscape of a silver birch woodland. Sound layering allows the viewer to just sit, watch, listen and be ‘transcended’ to another place.
