Sean Spicer: Texas shooting 'is not a guns issue'
I think we need to look real hard at mental health both in terms of screening and intervention to make sure the people who shouldn’t have guns don’t have access to them
After the horrendous mass shooting in a Texas church where a gunman killed 26 people, we spoke exclusively to Donald Trump's former Press Secretary Sean Spicer about his thoughts on American gun laws.
Sean Spicer said he agreed with the President, saying the Texas shooting was down to 'mental heath' problems, 'not a guns issue'.
He went on to say: "These are sick, deranged individuals committing these acts and that’s what we need to focus our time at".
Asked if anyone can really control Trump, or speak for him as a press secretary, given his use of Twitter, he said: “He’s his best spokesman, he knows what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. I don’t think there’s anybody that can get in there.
"What I tried to do, and what Sarah [Sanders] does a really good job at, is making sure that we check in with the President and be that spokesperson, the person that’s there when he can’t speak for himself because he’s in meetings, he’s tied up, trying to be that liaison to the media.”
Pushed on whether there’s a chance Trump might not run for President again, Spicer told Piers and Susanna: “Of course there’s a chance, it’s up to every individual to decide whether they want to or not. But he’s taken every move so far in terms of the rallies, making sure that they continue to raise money, they’re doing all of the things frankly a lot earlier than any other campaign has ever done when it comes to preparing for a re-election campaign.
"So there’s nothing that he’s doing that wouldn’t lead someone to believe that he is going to run for re-election.”
