Nicola Sturgeon 'confident' Scotland could join the EU

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon is urging remainers to vote for her party in the EU elections, even if they're against Scottish independence. Ms Sturgeon said she would still push for a second Scottish independence referendum even if the UK ends up remaining inside the European Union.

The First Minister of Scotland joined us on Good Morning Britain and said she was more sure than ever that an independent Scotland would be welcomed with open arms into the EU.

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid ahead of the European Elections, she confessed: “I’m more confident than I’ve ever been, and I was pretty confident in 2014, that Scotland would be welcomed with open arms by the EU. If you look at the 27 member states of the EU, about a dozen of them are countries of similar size to or smaller than Scotland. So, it’s perfectly normal to be a small independent country in the EU.”

Pressed further, she added: “We are not at the stage where we are going around asking for assurances, it’s not for the EU to infer. But if you can quote me anybody who has said that the EU would block an independent Scotland, then we can have that discussion, but you won’t be able to… When I travel across Europe there’s a real sympathy for the position Scotland finds itself in possibility being taken out of the EU against our will.”
