The man on a mission to make farming more diverse
When Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones emigrated to the UK from Jamaica, he dreamt of moving to the countryside and running his own farm. And after breaking boundaries by becoming one of Britain's only black farmers, Wilfred has now made it his mission to encourage more diversity into rural Britain.
According to the Government's survey of Agriculture which was published in June 2022 almost all farmers, 99.8% selected white as their ethnic group.
Speaking from the Writtle Agricultural College, Wilfred told This Morning one of the reasons for the lack of diversity. He said: "I'm from the Caribbean and most people from immigrant backgrounds came to this country and don't own land. Traditionally most land is handed down through the generations, so if you're from an immigrant background the chances of you owning land are very slim because land is really really expensive.
One of the things I'm really trying to fight is how can we get people from diverse backgrounds into the farming community."
