Schofe meets the real-life Crocodile Dundee, and a tower of giraffes
After two weeks of high-octane adventure, diving with great whites, completing the world’s highest commercial abseil, and haggling - very badly - in Cape Town; this week it’s time to take things just a little bit easy.
So with my wife Steph and the This Morning crew, we left Cape Town on a flight to Port Elizabeth; from there it was an hour's drive to Founders Lodge.

Part 4: Spot the two-tonne rhino, Schofe!
When we arrived at the lodge it was actually rather cold and wet, but the greeting couldn’t have been warmer, courtesy of Vicky and Wayne Nel who run this stunning location deep in the heart of the South African veld.
As we sat by a roaring log fire, sipping something suitably warming, we learned that Vicky is in charge of hospitality while Wayne (described by his wife as the real life Crocodile Dundee) has a career as a ranger that is longer than... well, longer than his very long knife.
The next morning we woke to the most glorious sunshine and headed out on our first game drive.
Many people come to South Africa on safari to see the Big 5. In the 19th and early 20th Century, hunters from Europe defined this list as the five most difficult animals to hunt; lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and elephant. These days most tourists - thank goodness - only want to shoot these magnificent creatures with their cameraphones.
Naturally, I was excited to see all of these animals, but my hope was to see a giraffe in the wild. What made this all the more special is that, whilst the shark diving was very much on my bucket list, and Steph joined me to share the adventure; to see a giraffe was as much Steph’s dream as mine.
When heading out into the wild, you need to make sure you are in the hands of experts; and we felt very confident and relaxed with Wayne and his colleague, Ranger Phillip - in fact the only risky thing on the trip were Wayne’s jokes. As we traversed the bush of both the Founders Lodge reserve and the nearby Amakhala Game Reserve we saw not just one giraffe, but ‘towers’ (the rather charming collective noun) of them.
Naturally, that wasn’t all we saw on our journey! We found out why a herd of zebras are known as a dazzle; our vehicle was charged by a… tortoise; and we enjoyed (courtesy of Vicky) the most amazing breakfast - safari style.
It was everything we had hoped for – and so much more.
All the bestPhillip
With thanks to
