Welcome to the Goldstein Residence
The final stop on our Movie Mansions tour is Beverley Hills, as Martyn arrives in a red 1960s convertible Mustang at the home of a Charlie's Angel - oh, and an adversary of The Dude, if you are into your Coen Brothers. Welcome to the Goldstein Residence, owned by multi-millionaire James Goldstein.
Designed in the early 1960s by visionary architect John Lautner, its unique space-aged design immediately grabs the attention. James bought the house in 1972 and enjoys models swimming past his bedroom window in the pool, an infinity tennis court, the soon to be completed Club James - his own personal nightclub (well you would, wouldn’t you!), not to mention the windows that retract automatically to offer what is possibly the best view of LA. Everything about the Goldstein Residence has the WOW factor.
Not only did this beacon of Sixties design play host to film crews, it was also the inspiration for the home of a super hero billionaire, as Martyn discovers from Phil Saunders, the concept artist of the Iron Man movies, who drew heavily from John Lautner's designs while creating Tony Stark's Malibu Mansion.
With thanks to
James Goldstein for opening the doors of his amazing house, and to Roberta Leighton and Kristin Fliehler for helping above and beyond.
Phil Saunders, for taking time out working on the epic Avengers: Age of Ultron to join us for our not quite so epic (but still rather lovely) film.
Judith Lautner and The John Lautner Foundation for their help and advice
Photographer Barry O’Rourke for his amazing photographs of John Lautner
