Train delayed? Now you’re due a cheque back
New rules about train delay compensation were meant to come in on Wednesday, but they’ve been, er… delayed. However, the good news is that many companies have already changed their procedures on the back of these rules.
Previously, if your train was delayed you were only entitled to a refund in National Rail vouchers or cash, but only sometimes, if you specifically asked for one of these. Now most rail firms will automatically give you a cheque when you complain.
So if your train’s been delayed – officially by more than an hour (yet most do by 30 minutes) – or cancelled, make sure you fill in the claim form. The exact amounts due depend on the firm and delay length. For example, if an East Coast train from Kings Cross to York that cost £52 was 40 minutes late, you’d be due at least £26. So ask for a complaint-form when you arrive at the station, or do it online at the train firm’s site, or call it up.
