FREE coffee and Tube travel! It's Martin Lewis' Quick Deals

Reclaim overpaid tax credits, FREE coffee and tube travel, FREE £25 eye test and 20% of Ralph Lauren. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Quick Deals.

Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.

Student finance... sorted by Martin Lewis

Live with someone with a mental disability? Are you owed £1,000s in overpaid council taxIf there’s only one person living in a house the council tax is cut by 25%. It’s well known that students are ‘disregarded’ for council tax purposes, in other words a non-student living with a student still gets the 25% single person discount.

Yet it’s very scarcely known that the same is also true for someone with a 'severe mental impairment', such as alzheimer’s or dementia. So if they live alone they shouldn’t pay any council tax, and if they live with someone then that person should get the 25% off discount. This is likely to affect 100,000s and I want to tell you after a call from Alzheimer's Society, Stroke Association, and Parkinson's UK that so few know.

To qualify for the discount the person needs to be medically certified as being severely mentally impaired and they need to be eligible for (not necessarily claiming) at least one of ten eligible benefits, including severe disablement allowance, disabled persons tax credit, incapacity benefits and employment and support allowance.

And this isn’t just going forward, it’s backdated to, as far as it was relevant back to 1993. One lady got in touch to say her mum got over £3,000 back after wrongly paying the full amount for seven years while her husband had dementia.

To make a claim either you or the person suffering a severe mental impairment can contact the council for a claim form, you can find your council contact details via the Government's 'Apply for Council Tax Reduction' site. For a retrospective claim, you'll need to write to your council explaining the circumstances – you'll need to do this separately even if you're claiming for a reduction going forward as well, though you can attach your letter to the claim form.

Free £3ish coffee every Monday in October. If you’ve an Android phone and it’s NFC enabled (near field communication – that allows you to use your phone as a payment device. Go to your settings it should tell you there if it is), download the free Android Pay app, and register your Mastercard on it. Then show this in any Café Nero store across the UK (except Northern Ireland) and you’ll get any free hot drink every Mondays during October (3, 10, 17 and 24). Drinks include lattes, teas, cappuccino and a flat white and you can get any size. You’ll only get one free drink on each Monday – so in total you can get four free drinks throughout October. And with drinks costing up to £3ish a time this can save you a fair bit.

Plus for those in London, if you use Android Pay to touch in on the tube (or any Transport for London service), on every Monday in October, Mastercard will credit you back the fare, up to a maximum of £30.50/day. It might take up to 28 days for the credit to appear.

Free £25 Vision Express eye test Go online to Vision Express by 11.59 tonight, and you can download a voucher for a free eye test in one of its stores, where it’s normally £25, to use by 31 October. You can book your appointment online, and you must take your voucher with you to the appointment. Alternatively Tesco Opticians also always offers a free eye test with no voucher needed. Remember, if you need a prescription you don’t need to buy glasses here – you can take your prescription to any optician. The voucher works in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. If you live in Scotland, you’re entitled to free eye tests anyway.

20% of Ralph Lauren: Go online to Ralph Lauren and you’ll be able to get 20% off most full-priced items when you enter the code RLGIVE until Tuesday 4 October. While Ralph Lauren’s not exactly MoneySaving, if you’d be buying the items anyway the code can save you a few bob. Examples of what’s included are a men’s polo shirt for £60 was £75 pre-code (next cheapest is £75 at House of Fraser), woman’s sweater for £88 was £110 pre-code (next cheapest is £109 at John Lewis) and a Men’s scarf for £39, was £49 pre-code. All reduced items will have a 20% banner across it, and delivery is £10 or free if you spend over £70.
