Make serious cash from your second-hand goods

eBay has officially scrapped selling fees, and Vinted now has 16 million users across the country, so this is the perfect time to get your second-hand goods online to make some extra cash. From the best days to list to the keywords you must include, our Coupon King, Jordon Cox, has his top tips to sell your items at the highest value and achieve record sales.

JORDON’S TOP TIPS & TRICKS:

1. TRICKS TO FIND OUT WHAT ITEMS ACTUALLY SELL FOR

  • Doing a normal eBay search isn’t the best way to find out your item’s true value. Instead, search for your item on eBay, and filter by ’Sold’ items. This gives you the recent history of what it actually sold for and the price people paid.

TOP TIP: When doing a search for Wii consoles, the first page has them priced at £50-60. But under the ’Sold’ section - you can see that most consoles go for around £20.

2. START YOUR AUCTIONS AT 1p:

  • It might sound risky, but listing your items at 1p can mean you get a higher price in the end. If you’re listing an Apple Mac laptop for 1p, it can gain lots of watchers and bidders early on… and all of those people that interacted with it, will continue to get emails and notifications.

TOP TIP: Of course, don’t do this for lower value items, as they could well sell for 1p!

3. END YOUR AUCTIONS AT PEAK TIMES:

  • The time your auctions end can make a huge difference to the value you get.

  • If it ends when most people are at work or asleep, you won’t get the last minute flurry of bids. The most profitable time for your listings to end is on a Sunday night.

TOP TIP: You can schedule your listings to start at any time (and therefore end at any time), but for the maximum coverage - starting a listing on a Thursday night for 10 days, covers 2 different weekends and ends on a Sunday night.

4. LIST DURING PEAK TIMES ON VINTED:

  • The opposite is true for Vinted! When you list an item, the newest listings appear at the very top for people browsing. And as there’s no auction countdown with Vinted, post your buys on a Sunday evening or weekday evening if you can for the most viewers!

5. IF SOMEONE FAVOURITES YOUR ITEM ON VINTED SEND A PRIVATE OFFER:

  • If your listing gets favorited by somebody on Vinted, you get a notification through. If you click on that notification, it allows you to send an offer to the person.

  • You can either send an offer with the full price it’s listed for, or with a little discount, to see if they’ll buy it.

6. FILL YOUR TITLES & DESCRIPTIONS WITH KEYWORDS:

  • Instead of “Men's Shirt” - try: "Zara Men’s Short Sleeve Blue & White Patterned Shirt (Large)”. + With the new keywords added in, it’ll now be shown in listings when people search “Blue shirt”, “Short Sleeve Shirt”, “Large Zara Men’s” - and so much more.

7. GET THE RIGHT PHOTOS TO INCREASE VALUE:

  • Decent photos of your items could double the value of what someone would pay. + As an example, both of these near identical iPhones sold in the same week. *STILL ON PLASMA SCREEN

  • One has grubby fingerprints all over, a dog in the background and is poorly lit. It sold for £386. + Whereas the other is pictured well. It sold for £470. That’s £84 more.

8. OFFER FREE POSTAGE - BUT ADD IT INTO THE ITEM’S COST:

  • If there’s an option of whether to ask for postage costs or not - always offer ‘free’ postage but instead factor the postage costs into the item’s asking price.

  • It’s all down to the human psyche. If we see an item is £20, but later see “+£5 postage. we have negative reactions, as it’s not as cheap as we first thought.

9. THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHILE SELLING ITEMS ONLINE

  • Always keep communication within the app. This ensures you’re covered under seller protection. Only take payment through the app. Never share your personal or banking details. Check the buyer's profile and reviews to verify their account.

  • Offers that come in within seconds of posting an item should be double-checked. Scammers will often wait around for items to be posted and will message the seller seconds after the post is made.
