Maimie McCoy's fat rascals

She's currently on our screens in All Creatures Great and Small, but Maimie McCoy likes to spend her spare time in the kitchen. Today’s she’s baking a Yorkshire classic inspired by the series - fruity little scones known as fat rascals! 

Fat rascals

Serves: 6

Ingredients

150g plain flour

150g self raising flour

130g butter

90g caster sugar

50g raisins

50g candied peel

50g currants

50g stem ginger

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2tsp nutmeg

1/2tsp ginger

Zest of 2 oranges

Zest of 1 lemon

50ml sour cream

2 eggs, one beaten

For topping

50g glacé cherries

50g blanched almonds

To serve

Jam 

Clotted cream

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees

2. Sift the flours and rub in the butter to make breadcrumbs

3. Mix in all of the zest, spices and fruits. Then stir in the sour cream and one of the eggs into the dough and bring together. 

4. Cut the dough into 12 and roll into balls, spacing out well. Pop each of the balls onto a tray with parchment. Brush with the beaten egg. 

5. Slice the cherries in half and place on for eyes, and slice the almonds and place 3 on for the mouth

6. Bake for 15-20 mins until golden brown

7. Best serve warm with jam and clotted cream
