Looking for Black Friday bargains? Here's how to spot a fake deal

According to a recent report, nearly nine in ten Black Friday ‘deals’ are not discounted at all. In a report from consumer brand Which?, most so-called savings are the same price, or more expensive, than they were previously.

Alice Beer joins us with a guide to navigating Black Friday so you can be a savvy saver ahead of Christmas.

Looking for Black Friday bargains? Here's how to spot a fake deal!

1. Check the price across multiple sites: This is the most basic check you can do, but research found that 13% of Black Friday shoppers didn't do this in 2017

2. Check the price history: Make a shortlist of the products you want to look out for in the Black Friday sales, and then look them up on websites such as Pricerunner, PriceSpy and CamelCamelCamel to find out their price history

3. Be wary of price wars: Claims such as 'was £100, now £50' are abundant on Black Friday. Don't let these 'anchor prices' mislead you. Retailers shout about savings, often in red to grab attention as a way of influencing customers.

4. Look out for extra detail: Look out for notes of signs explaining offers. The rules that govern special offers are vague. In some instances, shops can get away with using 'was' prices that haven't been in place for a long time if they put up a sign explaining the deal. Tactics such as this can make offers look better than they are.
